Silence by the Fire

Writer’s Statement

Silence is rare nowadays with so much going on each and every day but on a snowy winter night as you sit by the fire as it slowly starts to die and everyone begins to fall asleep. Just then is one of the rare times silence is real other than the soft crackling of the fire.

This was in a way the inspiration for my work. I want it to put this image of sitting by a warm crackling fire in the minds of readers and by using the repetition of silence I believe it really emphasizes the rarity of real silence. I chose to pull this page from a Harry Potter book because it also contributes to memories of my younger self reading Harry Potter by the fire. JK. Rowling also uses very vivid descriptions in her writing perfect for a blackout poem.
